Dividing-wall columns gain momentum

Article Abstract:

UOP, based in Des Plaines, IL, is designing and providing what is claimed to be the first dividing-wall distillation column (DWC) in the US. According to Michael A. Schultz, the company's process research specialist, the column will save 35% in capital spendings and 50% in energy costs, compared with traditional two-colum setup. This thermal recoupling of columns will be employed in the Pacol Enhancement Process, which removes aromatics from a feed to an alkylation unit in a detergent facility.

Forays in smart instrumentation

Article Abstract:

Pressurized air is relied upon by approximately 13% of devices used for signal transmission in plant instrumentation, while electronic instrumentation accounts for the remainder. Only approximately 40% of this electronic instrumentation is smart, as lack of plant wiring and process-control system?s compatibility and scarcity of universal digital protocol inhibit the use of smart instrumentation.
