Don't let the pinch pinch you

Article Abstract:

The overemphasis on 'pinch' technology rules and procedures can unnecessarily complicate chemical plant design. As introduced by the Chimoda team, what later became known as pinch technology was not overly focused on pinch. To Umeda and his co-workers, the pinch was not essential in controlling design but was important in directing process design. The article gives examples of plant designs that are both simple and energy efficient using pinch technology.

Coupled distillation with fewer vapor transfers

Article Abstract:

Air Products and Chemicals Inc has developed a framework for converting the classical two-way thermal coupling between two distillation columns into a one-way liquid-only transfer. The conversion is achieved through the addition of one or more distillation sections and a reboiler or condenser with each added section. The equivalent thermally coupled configurations derived by the method are quite flexible.

Restore corroded heat exchanger tubes

Article Abstract:

Chemical process industries can restore damaged heat exchanger tubes and return exchanger bundles to full active service by using thin-walled metallic tube inserts. Metallic inserts are also better in repairing leaking tubes compared to traditional tube restoration and erosion/corosion protection methods of using flanged or flared plastic tube inserts, full-length plastic tube liners and ceraic ferrules.
