Educating engineers on safety

Article Abstract:

The engineering curriculum should include and highlight the importance of ensuring safety of workers in construction projects. In an era when innovations are constantly being introduced in engineering materials and in actual engineering procedures, all aspects of the design stage should be examined closely for possible safety and health hazards. There have already been several cases wherein construction firms were penalized and their presidents imprisoned due to negligence of workers' safety.

Safety ladder locks into place

Article Abstract:

Jean-Francois Raymond has designed a flexible ladder which locks semi-rigid on unfolding, dubbed X-IT. The ladder, which features 'U' shaped rod frames, has been tested by Middlesex University Department of Engineering to a distributed load of 1,000 lbs. The innovative ladder is intended for use as a fire escape in domestic houses and other buildings which do not benefit from an emergency exit route.
