Eldorado after the boom

Article Abstract:

The Spanish construction industry is experiencing a slump but there may be opportunities for British electrical contractors to find work there. Electrical contractors must register with the Spanish authorities and must hold recognised qualifications as well as possessing the necessary equipment. All work has to be inspected and contractors for even small jobs must be registered. British contractors may find work in areas with an ex-patriot population or in conjunction with Spanish firms but are unlikely to be able to compete against local firms in many areas.

A loaded question

Article Abstract:

An intelligent heating system, CELECT, has been developed by a consortium of 25 regional electricity companies, led by research body EA Technology. The system allows the occupier of a house to input how often each room is used and what temperature is required. The information is used in conjunction with weather data and electricity costs provided by the electricty supply company to optimise cost and performance of the domestic heating system. Trials are being carried out in order to decide how the system can be marketed.

Refurbishment can be a chancy business

Article Abstract:

The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) predicts that business for electrical contractors from new works and repairs and maintenance will increase at a lower rate during 1995. There are suggestions that refurbishment work will dominate the commercial work. There is also potention for refurbishment work in the housing market, but a lack of funds. Lighting technology offers considerable scope for refurbishment, particularly in private dwellings.
