Energy and development: what planners can do

Article Abstract:

UK planners can help improve energy efficiency in a number of ways. Market forces left to themselves are unlikely to lead to sustainable economic development. Better design should be promoted including natural ventilation in buildings. Urban planners can help through transport inetgration. Local authorities in the UK which have sought to promote energy efficiency include Newcastel-upon-Tyne City Council. Planners can lobby to improve policy at national level as well as regulating at local level.

The greening of the black

Article Abstract:

Land reclamation and urban regeneration are the main issues facing the Black Country Development Corp (BCDC), which covers an area of around 26 sq km between Walsall, Sandwell and Wolverhampton. There is a large amount of derelict, vacant and contaminated land, and the BCDC has therefore focused on providing reclaimed sites in order to attract investment. Particular efforts are being made to establish a regeneration belt along the route of the Black Country New Road.
