Feeding frenzy at E&C firms

Article Abstract:

The use of front-end engineering and design (Feed) tool can cut the capital costs of a new plant by a one-third. The software can be use to produce flow diagrams, plot plans, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment lists and cost estimates. Feed optimization packages are usually composed of various programs designed to perform various applications in process conceptualization and basic engineering. Among the latest software packages are AEA Technology PLC'S Axsys data manager and Cadcentre Group PLC's Focus project management software.

Bus system positioners that feature improved two-way digital communication technologies are the latest developments in contol valves. The devices are not only faster but more informative compared to their predecessors. The latest control valves, which are now equipped for extensive datalogging and diagnostics, can be interrogated using a web browser via a company intranet or through the Internet.

New plastics-recycling mandates

Article Abstract:

The European Commission (EC) is poised to update its 1994 Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive to deal with the growing mounds of discarded plastic packaging in Europe. The EC has a yearend 2000 deadline in which to propose new recycling directives for all types of packaging that will serve as a guide to national legislation from 2001 to 2005. Environmentalists and industry experts do not agree on which alternative to use, incineration for energy content or recycling for reuse.
