Get the root of the problem

Article Abstract:

Dearborn, MI-based United Technologies (UT) Automotive has adopted the approach of identifying the root cause of the problem and taking a look at the whole system in the implementation of QS-9000. The approach targets reasons on why the system broke down rather than focus on the symptoms of the problem. However, senior managers are advised to adequately support teamwork to effectively determine the root cause of the problem and teach people to solve problems by keeping in mind that the problem should not occur again.

Practical use of color-measurement devices grows

Article Abstract:

Color and color variation should come in a common language for manufacturers. Color-analysis devices, such as the spectrophotometer, quantify a color's hue, chroma and intensity as they operate on the principle of reflected light. However, this very principle means that color-analysis instruments can also yield two different results for two different surfaces with similar color. To address this problem, some manufacturers employ a team of trained visual inspectors to evaluate certain features, including color.

Engelhard uses DOE to bring TriMax to market, win award

Article Abstract:

A design of experiments (DOE) approach in developing a more efficient catalytic converter while minimizing costs has facilitated Engelhard Corp.'s introduction of the TriMax to the market. The need for such a catalytic converter was underscored by the unsteady cost of rhodium and more stringent emission standards. The DOE technique has enabled Engelhard to conduct simultaneous testing of several variables and to introduce the TriMax to the market faster.
