Cautious welcome greets the Rural White Paper

Article Abstract:

The UK government has issued policy proposals relating to rural areas in its Rural White Paper. The white paper argues that rural employment should be fostered and a new planning category called rural business use should be established. Other issue discussed in the white paper include rural shopping facilities and the need for more rented accommodation at a reasonable rate. The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) notes that some of its recommendations have been taken up in the white paper.

NRA acts to integrate land use and water resource planning

Article Abstract:

The UK National Rivers Authority (NRA) has launched a strategic plan for the river Thames, England. The plan moves toward integrating planning of water resources and land use. There are recommendations for enhancing the environment of waterside areas. The document recommends plants land near water with native species, and relating riverside developments to their water frontage. The NRA will be passing its duties to the Environment Agency in 1996.

Environmentalists set targets for the biodiversity challenge

Article Abstract:

The UK's leading environmental organisations have published 'Biodiversity Challenge,' a document which sets down their aims for conservation activity. This will serve as a 'conservation target checklist,' and comes when the government's Biodiversity Action Plan has been in operation for a year. It is very critical of the state of biodiversity in the UK, and sets goals to prevent further extinction of species and destruction of natural habitats.
