Going underground

Article Abstract:

The 'Review of Radioactive Waste Management Policy: Final Conclusions' White Paper has been released by the government. The report aims to bring nuclear waste disposal in line with policies published in 'Sustainable Development - The UK Strategy'. It is suggested that radioactive waste should not be created necessarily, and that waste disposal should minimise risk to the environment and the public. An overview of the White Paper is provided, along with industry reactions.

Arresting the cause of crime with design: a two-year crime study in Bexley by the BRE could play a part in halting the decline of Britain's town centres

Article Abstract:

A survey by the British Retail Consortium indicated a fall in the cost of crime to its members, but retailers believe that more could be done. Shop premises are much more likely to be burgled than private homes and many premises suffer repeated attacks. The Buildings Research Establishment is undertaking a crime study in the borough of Bexley to determine which design weaknesses attract criminals.

Flexile forays along the post-grad trail: post-graduate courses are still the most popular path to take

Article Abstract:

Post-graduate courses, leading to exemption from the RTPI's exams, are usually full time, taking two years. Universities are now more flexible about how a post-graduate course is taken and full time study is not the only option. Part time courses can be taken, and RTPI-accredited programmes are also available on day release.
