Gripping technology gets super accurate

Article Abstract:

SMC Pneumatics Inc. has developed a new range of electric grippers which combine user-friendliness with high levels of accuracy. Windows-based programs allow a choice of operation mode based on position, velocity and force. This degree of control input permits great flexibility and precision levels within two microns. The technology has a wide range of potential applications in precision automation, particularly those requiring measurement and detection capabilities.

Joint design conquers expansion problem

Article Abstract:

It is very difficult to join ceramics to other materials because of problems connected to thermal expansion and joint degradation. Dynamic Ceramic has developed and patented a new, mathematically simple system that overcomes such problems and that relies on joint angles. The two faces of the different materials are at a similar angle, allowing the materials to glide past each other when heated and to retain their sealing characteristics.

The mechanics of joint design

Article Abstract:

The Fastener Engineering and Research Association (FERA) has created the FERA Toolkit, a software package that helps industrial designers develop mechanically fastened joints. The Toolkit provides advice, technical specifications, and a list of relevant website links, such as the FERA homepage and the British Standards Institute.
