Hard on the outside, soft in the middle

Article Abstract:

Plastics engineers have established ways of making polymers with zones of differing physical states: glassy or crystalline; rubbery and viscous flow. New research shows that a new polymer state where no viscoelasticity exists with interim modulus at temperatures of over 200 degrees centigrade. Numerous applications have been developed using polymers with varying elasticity including gear wheels and racing bicycle wheels.

VR comes out of the screen

Article Abstract:

Virtual reality can be useful in all stages of engineering development including concept studies, prototype trials and performance validation. The military and aerospace sectors continue to lead, but there are also opportunities for its use in civilian consumer products. Virtual reality has bee used to study a grenade launcher, and on completion of the design, the same system will be used for training.

Lubrication comes in from the cold

Article Abstract:

Research into improving lubricants' performance at very low temperatures is discussed. SKF and Lulea University have studied the viscosity of lubricants and produced a viscous grease for train wheel bearings, to prevent bearings from freezing.
