High tech 'fuse' warns of failure

Article Abstract:

A fatigue fuse developed by Tensiodyne Corp can give a reliable estimate of a structure's remaining fatigue life. The fuse can also provide advance warning of sudden fatigue failure in time for the user to take appropriate action. The fuses can operate without remote monitoring, but they have also been incorporated into an electronic remote monitoring system, which Hughes Aircraft has developed, to form the Fatigue Fuse Monitoring System.

Torque sensors stopped from twisting

Article Abstract:

For development work on steering and transmissions systems, it is vital to be able to measure torque, but torque measurement systems have been historically difficult to fit. Industrial Measurements has developed a retrofit torque measurement system that is relatively easy to install.

Spray-on sensors beat the shakes

Article Abstract:

Developments in the design of paint-borne sensor technology are described. Researchers at Newcastle University, UK, have designed technology which uses piezo-electric 'paint' which can be applied to any structure to detect metal fatigue.
