We still need unfettered research

Article Abstract:

Unfettered research was very popular during the period immediately after World War II. The government encouraged researchers to work on subjects of their own choice driven by curiosity and free thinking. However, this kind of research has declined over the years as more and more companies abandon unfettered research in favor of more directed, short-term research. This trend may continue for while, but unfettered research still has to be encouraged and supported as it remains crucial to corporate and national success.

Planning a successful R&D alliance

Article Abstract:

The development of a technical alliance in the industrial research field must be evaluated in terms of a situation analysis to determine modes of approach and success probability. Duracell applied such a procedure when it sought an alliance for the development of a new battery system with a European partner for the international market. Similarity of market needs, a common base technology and complementary technology were some factors that contributed to the R&D alliance's success.
