ISO 14000: friend or foe

Article Abstract:

The helpfulness of the International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) 14000 depends on its ability to reduce environmental impacts, be incorporated into a compliance program that is accepted by all federal agencies and implementation at a reasonable cost. According to critics, ISO 14000 standards are based on European standards rather than American technology standards. This is due to their formulation in conjunction with the European standard setting body. The ISO 14000 standards may cause problems for midsize U.S. companies exporting to Europe from domestic manufacturing facilities.

Will the OHSMS standards become a reality?

Article Abstract:

Strong opposition from some US and European companies has hindered the adoption of an international occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS). The Technical Management Board of the International Organization for Standardization will take a decision regarding this issue in a meeting in Jan. 1997. Some companies feel that a international standard in this area is not needed. However, there is a strong minority opinion in some of the companies who believe in the necessity of such a standard.
