In search of human happiness

Article Abstract:

Two city centre planning projects in Glasgow, Scotland, have jointly won the Royal Town Planning Institute Silver Jubilee Cup for achievement. The first project, the City Centre Realm Strategy, was aimed at introducing a concept of cafe culture to the city and was designed to improve the layout of the city centre for use by pedestrians. The second project, the Cathedral Precinct Project, has created an attractive precinct around Glasgow cathedral and also includes two housing schemes to bring new life to the heart of the city.

Injecting new life

Article Abstract:

A city regeneration project in Manchester, England, has received a commendation in the Royal Town Planning Institute Achievement Awards. The city's Central Manchester Development Corporation, established in 1988 to facilitate the regeneration of Manchester city centre, has played a central role in the development of almost 200 ha of land. The corporation has successfully created an urban village environment in an area distinguished by several ornate Victorian warehouses.

Vision on

Article Abstract:

Horsham town centre has been awarded the Boots Centre Vision Award for outstanding contribution to a town/city centre. Centre Vision is an initiative backed by the Department of Environment and Boots The Chemist, and operated by the Civic Trust. Horsham town square has been transformed from a roundabout, into a public space for cafes, theatres and concerts, at a cost of 14.8 million pounds sterling in road, public and pedestrianisation works.
