No fire without sparks

Article Abstract:

Electrical fires caused damage worth 350 million pounds sterling between 1990 and 1995, and in 1995 the cost of repairing electrical fire damage amounted to 45 million pounds. Causes range from faulty heating and lighting appliances, wiring in plugs or sockets and faulty equipment. Burns from fires and electrical shock are very common, with 3,500 employees or self-employed people being reported injured between 1989/90 and 1995/6. Workplaces need to be made safer and dangerous practices stopped. Fines also need to be raised so that employers comply with regulations.

Cat scanning

Article Abstract:

The most recent standards in product design should be used for new data network installations. Some industry experts suggest Cat 6 cable could be used as it has a number of advantages of the Cat 5 or Cat 5E cables, such as providing a 700% better power sum ACR performance at 100 MHz. Other experts prefer to use products which meet the Cat 5E specification. It has been suggested some installers are not using Cat 6 because they have not been supplied with the new products. The installation of a Cat 5E network costs about 15-20% less than the Cat 6.
