Laser spectroscopy leads to quick results

Article Abstract:

A remote form of spectroscopy has been developed with high accuracy levels using lasers and advanced optics. The process of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was originally developed for the nuclear industry, but it has the scope to be used for inspections in chemical and radioactive waste tanks. A short laser pulse is transmitted down an optical fibre, blasting off a tiny amount of material. The ionised cloud recombines to produc a light-emitting plasma. The system requires no prior sample preparation and therefore can pre-empt problems with control rods.

Charged film feels the pinch: An electrochemical film than can measure the heartbeat of a person touching it promises a wide application base

Article Abstract:

An electromechanical film which has a permanent electric charge has been developed. It can convert a 1nm deflection into a 9mV signal and can be used for security flooring, audio equipment and multimedia products. It is a thin, foil-like material coated with electrode layers. It is so sensitive that it can detect rapid pressure changes, and could be used to measure physiological signals, such as heartbeat and breathing rate.

Plain speaking

Article Abstract:

There are many different bearing technologies, and it can be difficult to select the most appropriate one for a particular application. Designers often fail to consider plain bearings, which are smaller and lighter than roller units.
