Lessons from the corporate university

Small companies can reorganize their training departments and imitate the more centralized, proactive and strategic format of corporate universities. Small companies can benefit from the best practices of corporate universities which include providing employees an understanding of corporate culture, promoting cross-functional skills, adopting a technology-based training and being particular about the cycle time to develop advanced learning solutions. They are also advised to educate outsiders and develop degree programs in partnership with outside companies.

Manufacturing companies are advised to put more focus on the efficiency of employee training and thus raise the return of investment. Companies should gain an understanding of the factors that affect a training's cost and effectiveness to be able to raise the training's return of investment. Three training techniques that are recommended by training professionals include performance-needs analysis, the training-needs analysis and the feasibility analysis.

Article Abstract:

Companies should realize that real training is a give and take process, where trainees learn to comprehend and practice new skills, instead of just merely acquiring information. Real training transforms information into meaningful ideas by actively engaging the trainee's participation. Converting telling into training can be easy by following six major elements that include incentives, objectives, organization and participation.
