London land use policy is failing to fuel regeneration

Article Abstract:

Office development is no longer prompting inner city regeneration and could be a key source of long-term problems in London, England, according to a review of the office market commissioned by LPAC. It is now time for strategic and local planning authorities to look more closely at other opportunities, such as converting offices into hotels. Boosting economic activity in London is also considered in a report produced by Arup Economics and Planning. This makes a number of strategic land use planning recommendations.

A planned science and technology park in Dartford will contribute to the regeneration of London's Thames Gateway. The 42 ha park, which has received outline approval for construction, will incorporate a university campus, student accommodation, technology businesses and laboratories, and a town with restaurants, bars, shops and homes. The park will be developed jointly by the University of Greenwich, the South Thames Regional Health Authority, the Wellcome Foundation and Dartford Borough Council.

Plastering over the urban wounds

Article Abstract:

Short-term regeneration initiatives can cause a number of problems, according to a report sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Regeneration can only be successful if everyone involved understands what is meant by 'sustainable' and what is acceptable as a lifespan for a scheme. There is often a lack of involvement by local people in such initiatives, and short-term renewal schemes are rarely reviewed after their completion.
