MCC: An Industry Response to the Japanese Challenge

Article Abstract:

The Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp. (MCC) is a cooperative between thirteen companies to counter a Japanese initiative in developing the next generation of computers. Admiral Bob R. Inman heads the privately funded corporation. Areas of research include microelectronics packaging, software technology, computer-aided design and manufacturing, and advanced architectures. Fear of sharing research and development and fear of antitrust laws were obstacles to formation of the corporation.

The DOE's Chief on U.S. Energy Policy

Article Abstract:

The United States secretary of energy, Donald P. Hodel, states administration policy as minimizing governmental intervention in the marketplace and balancing energy-supply mix so that energy will be cheap and plentiful. Hodel does not want the government involved in the energy business. Hodel sees solar power research continuing despite lack of goverment funds and fusion power requiring funds to continue development.

The Space-age Materials Challenge

Article Abstract:

The pure oxygen atmosphere in the Apollo One spacecraft contributed to the flash fire that killed three astronauts. Spacecraft atmospheres have since been altered to resemble air and fire-retardant glass fibers are used for most materials in the crafts. New materials may find application with commercial airline companies.
