Nanotechnology: What will it mean?

Article Abstract:

Nanotechnology has an enormous potential to bring about change, but whether the technology will be used to do good or evil remains a problematical question. Concerns were expressed as long ago as 1986 in a book by nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler titled 'Engines of Creation' and in a 1988 follow-up essay called 'A Dialog on Dangers.' It has taken time for the research community to accept the technology's feasibility, but nanotechnology is finally being taken seriously. In Jan 2000, the President of the United States called for a $500 million National Nanotechnology Initiative.
