Needs and Uses

Article Abstract:

Currently available technologies should allow fifth generation computers to produce commercial results by the early 1990s. Advances in integrated information-management systems, new computer architectures, and improved human-machine interfaces will make these new applications possible. Integration of separate systems will allow greater automation in industry and offices. Expert systems will aid problem solving in science, engineering, and medicine. Software production will be improved by automatic programming and very high-level programming languages. Other applications in aerospace, the military, consumer services, health care, and even arts and leisure will be made possible in the future. These are all examined in a chart.

Product planners assess users' needs

Article Abstract:

Adequate market research is a vital step in the process of developing products that will sell and remain in demand. Methods of measuring a potential market range from complex demographic analyses to the mall intercept, questioning consumers at the shopping mall. Predictions also are made to estimate future needs. Communication between engineers and market analysts becomes critical in assuring that the right features are designed into the product. Sensitivity to market trends and the ability to incorporate new features into existing designs are also important.

A Day in the Life of a New-Generation Computer User

Article Abstract:

A fictional account of a typical computer user's day in 1993 is given. Different applications encountered include a traffic analysis and routing system, electronic mailbox, speech recognition and synthesis, and an expert system for travel planning. A color graphics workstation with a touch-sensitive screen can display a multimedia computer 'book' to simulate a walk through any city.
