Old rivalries, new arsenals: Should the United States worry?

Article Abstract:

Small countries with unconventional weapons may become a military threat to the US in the first decades of the 2000s. Weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles, Congress has been told, are far more available around the world than they used to be. There is a sort of club of renegade nations that seem to work together to avoid restraints of nonproliferation accords. Access to information around the globe is also a factor. The technical personnel of the West and especially of the former Soviet Union can now easily move to one of the renegade Third World nations. Religious and ideological attitudes are a factor and the bloc allied with the US is often not in a position to compete for these people. Many of those scientists and engineers are anxious to improve their economic situations. Timetables set up by Western intelligence may not be accurate. Table lists lesser powers and ballistic missile types each holds.

Taking the twinkle out of starlight

Article Abstract:

A new technology called adaptive optics is removing the atmospheric tremor, caused by the turbulent mixing of air at different temperatures, which continually changes the speed and direction of starlight as it passes through our atmosphere. The technique counteracts the atmospheric distortion to give a clearer picture.
