Partnering for total quality: SEMATECH is helping US firms regain worldwide market share leadership for purchases of semiconductor equipment

Article Abstract:

The Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Institute (SEMATECH) was founded in 1987 in response to the industry recognition of drastic loss of market share both by equipment manufacturers and materials suppliers. SEMATECH conducted a survey of domestic companies that showed both materials suppliers and manufacturers would rather deal with Japanese companies. In response SEMATECH developed a management training program aimed at instituting a culture of partnering for total quality. The program has been deemed a success by many of its participants.
