Peripherals: applications '90

Article Abstract:

Trends in computer peripherals in 1989 featured higher density storage systems in more form factors, advances in media, and the arrival of color thermal printers. Shipments of 3.5-inch floppy drives exceeded those of 5.25-inch models for the first time. Specific trends included the move to 1-inch high drives, new floppy drives and diskettes with hard-disk capacities and servo techniques, advent of 2.0-inch floppy drives, and announcements of 5.25-inch hard disk drives with 1Gbyte capacities. Maximum areal bit densities reached 52,000 bits/inch, while maximum rotational speeds to 5,400 rpm reduced average latency time in one hard-disk drive to 5.5ms. Sales of optical disk drives were expected to grow 107 percent in 1989. Erasable optical drives arrived, but they are substantially slower than magnetic drives. Laser printer prices dropped, and 300-dpi thermal printers debuted.

The iffy 'Orient Express'

Article Abstract:

The national aerospace plane (NASP) program is striving to develop a hypersonic, single-stage-to orbit vehicle. Such a technologically advanced aircraft could be beneficial for both military and commercial purposes. The X-30, an experimental craft to test hypersonic flight at speeds up to Mach 25, is under development, and commercial high-speed airplanes that operate at Mach 2.0 to 2.4 are under investigation. The NASP budget has been cut, however, and the US presidential election together with the growing budget deficit could further jeopardize program funding.
