Pistons have a spring in their step

Article Abstract:

Pistons with advanced springs are claimed to make engines 30% more efficient. The springs improve fuel efficiency and they could be used in a number of different machines. The spring is in the piston and it compresses by around 4.5mm to 7mm, absorbing energy which it retains until the optimum moment for the crankshaft to deliver torque. The idea has been developed by electrical engineer, Bill Galvin. He reckons that 30 to 40% savings will be made on fuel consumption.

Novel design has a spring in its step

Article Abstract:

A new type of coil spring could expand the applications of springs. It is wound to alternate between two different diameters throughout its length, with the inner coils tucked inside the outer coils. It is produced using modern CNC coil widing equipment and possible applications include the replacement of rubber bushings in automotive suspensions struts.

Current injection adds power and speed

Article Abstract:

IST Laboratories have developed brushless motors with application to domestic appliance and automation industries. The technology involves injecting current into the stator coils. Greater power and speed is achievable than in conventional brushed motors. Changing to brushless motors would increase reliability.
