Article Abstract:
Power Measurement Ltd. designed the 7330 ION, a digital power meter/transducer that can perform over a hundred high-precision, three-phase measurements and replaces several traditional metering devices. The system can also cut wiring and space needs in switchboards, switchgear panels, or motor control centers. The 7330 ION can measure power quality on all voltage and current inputs in terms of individual and total harmonic distortion. The system also has better data logging, multi-port communications, I/O connectivity, and control capabilities. The system is ideal for applications which include feeder monitoring and outage direction.

Hybrid electric vehicles take to the streets
Article Abstract:
Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) powered by gasoline engine and electric motor address the issues of driving range and environmental concerns. The Prius HEV from Toyota Motor Corp. is one example of HEVs currently under production that utilizes the best features of a gasoline engine and a battery-power system. Available only in Japan at present, Prius bridges the gap between driving range and environmental concerns. But several challenges must first be addressed, before Prius can become widely available. One of these challenges is converting the vehicle from a right-hand drive to a left-hand drive.

Nickel-metal hydride batteries are fast becoming a top candidate to propel pure as well as hybrid electric vehicles. This kind of battery technology delivers impressive energy performance and outstanding power capability, giving it am edge over previous battery systems such as nickel-cadmium. In addition, none of the earlier battery technologies have exhibited longevity, tolerance to electric abuse, safety, capability to achieve maintenance-free operation over a broad range of temperature and other criteria better than nickel-metal hydride batteries.
