Quality in R and D demands right writing

Article Abstract:

One of the problems faced by R and D professionals concerns their ability to write comprehensive technical reports. Most technical professionals seem to think that their writing skills are not essential to the whole research process. Unfortunately, a poorly written report causes significant losses of time, money and departmental stature. Common areas of writing errors include spelling and capitalization, grammar and punctuation, misuse of words and poor format, redundancy and wordiness, hedging or lack of definitiveness, lengthy paragraphs and sentences, passive language, inappropriate tone or vagueness and poor organization.

E-mail with feeling

It is possible to convey feelings in electronic mail (e-mail). Some of the important items to remember in writing better e-mail include knowing the emotional meaning of grammar and punctuation, using 'emoticons' and acronyms to communicate moods and the use of the appropriate type formats, sizes, colors and styles to highlight a message. Other techniques include the use of the 'Re' line and the same format and style of letter-writing applied in conventional letters.
