Reusing chemical-cartridge respirators

Article Abstract:

Several factors influence the chemical adsorption and desorption of chemical-cartridge respirators. These are the greater volatility which increases the risk of vapor migration; concurrent adsorption of water and gas vapors; amount of material adsorbed onto the cartridge during the first use; prolonged storage time; and vapor type. Users are also advised to check for volatile chemicals that may desorb during nonuse and against two or more chemicals adsorbed sequentially before reusing respirators.

A new biofilter gets its first real job

Article Abstract:

Envirogen Inc introduced its biotrickling filter at the North Island Navy Station by treating a methylene chloride-contaminated air stream from a spray-painting operation. In previous tests, the 5,000 ft3/min filter destroyed 99% of volatile organic compounds methyl ethyl ketone, acetone and methlylene chloride. The filter is structured as hollow, perforated plastic spheres with internal cross-members which provide a large surface area in which bacteria can metabolize the compounds.
