Selective reduction with Cp(sub.2)ZrHCl

Article Abstract:

Selective reduction with bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium chloride hydride, Cp(sub.2)ZrHCl, is discussed by a graduate reserach student and a faculty member, both at the Dept. of Medicinal Chemistry, University of Kansas, Lawrence, and a senior research scientist in the medicinal chemistry division of Coelacanth Corp. Functional group manipulation is critical in synthetic organic chemistry. Tertiary amides are convenient intermediates in multistep organic syntheses, but difficult to remove selectrively. The hydrozirconium reagent discussed is suitable. Topics include reduction to aldehydes, scope and selectivity, establishing the mechanism, and advantages of Cp(sub.2)ZrHCl.
