Seven year pitch for Atex

Article Abstract:

It is important that UK electrical contractors are aware of regulations entitled 'The Equipment and Protective Systems Intended for Use in Potentially Explosive Atmosphere Regulations 1996.' These regulations, which are based on the 1994 Atex (Atmospheres Explosives) Directive, will not come into force until Jul 01, 2003, but manufacturers will need to redesign equipment before that date. The regulations cover electrical, mechanical equipment and protective systems, and are designed to allow free trade between EC countries.

Succeeding in security: security might be a business opportunity for electrical contractors but many are uncertain how to ensure a profit

Article Abstract:

There has been an unprecedented number of applications for membership of the ECA Security Division, possibly due to an awareness of the value of ensuing maintenance contracts. Security work requires a different, professional, dedicated approach, and should be backed with NACOSS, the appropriate certification body for security installation work. Additional requirements to normal electrical work include the ability to assess the risk to property being protected, and commissioning, for which training will be required.

Control cliques

Article Abstract:

Moves to cut the costs of control systems by simplifying design or programming are leading to renewed demand for the services of electrical contractors involved in the design and installation of control and automation systems. Sales of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), for example, are set to rise by 5.4% a year until 2002, reaching 399,700. There is particular demand for micro and small PLCs.
