Store wars: criticised from all sides, Northern Ireland's planning service has become counter fodder in the wars between Sainsbury's and existing traders

Article Abstract:

The Northern Ireland planning service has received much criticism and the major controversies have been on the retail front. This was particularly so when Sainsbury's announced plans to open in Norther Irleand, followed by Tesco. Regional shopping centres felt there was a relaxation of planning guidelines and that their businesses would be at risk. They also claimed that Sainsbury's was acquiring sites that had been denied to them. The Planning Service Agency is aiming to resolve the differences through a course of best practice.

A desire for streets without cars: car-free housing estates could become a reality if an Edinburgh scheme proves successful

Article Abstract:

A car-free housing estate is planned on a derelict goods yard in Edinburgh. Tenants would have to sign an agreement undertaking not to own a car, an only a limited number of parking spaces would be provided, with restricted vehicle access. The Canmore Housing Association would provide public tansport links, shopping facilities and schools, with a communal car pool available for long or importan journeys.

'From the tiny acorn...a successful woodland strategy can grow'

Article Abstract:

Woodland planting usually requires a partnership approach and a strategy should define the roles of participating agencies. Woodland strategies include the protection of woodlands using Tree Preservation Orders and the identification of areas where planting can be undertaken. Tree warden schemes are often set up where planting sites are managed and monitored by individuals from the local community.
