Artistic designs on the urban canvas: planning may hold the key to the successful re-creation of artistic communities as ' investable' areas

Article Abstract:

Hackney council in London has recently been criticised for its attempt to demolish part of a major 'artists' community to build industrial units, with the aim of regenerating the area. Those protesting believe that the area could provide an urban village for the local people. Managing director of Urban Cultures John Montgomery, believes that planning artistic communites is possible with the right strategies.

Influential figure in British planning dies

Article Abstract:

Honorary member of the RTPI and planner David Edward Charles Eversley has died at the age of 73. Eversley was of German Jewish descent and he moved to Reading to attend Leighton Park School in 1936. Eversley was appointed chief planner to the Greater London Council in 1969, which he left in 1972 for a varied career representing a number of organisations and societies.

Dee is for development: the Chester Waterways Study, winner of the 1995 Landscape Institute's planning award, provides a model for urban authorities

Article Abstract:

The Chester Waterways Study was the winner of the 1995 Landscape Institute's planning award. It focused on the River Dee and the Shropshire Union Canal and sought to improve the city for inward investment and tourism, increase employment, enhance natural habitats and encourage better user of the river and canal.
