Teaming up for safety and architectural expression

Article Abstract:

A performance-based approach was used by a team of consulting engineers which were conducting an engineering analysis for a 700,000-sq-ft expansion of the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. The design of the facility drew upon all fire-protection and life-safety systems found in the prescriptive code pertaining to smoke-control, fire-sprinkler, fire-alarm and compartmentation systems. Fire scenarios were developed from calorimeter data and through calculations. The tools and methods devveloped throughout the performance-based design proved to be invaluable for providing timely and accurate responses to various design options.

Breathing new life into old high-rise cooling systems

Article Abstract:

RNL Design decided on the installation of new cooling systems for the Independence Plaza in Denver, CO, as this would be more economically efficient than to connect to the Public Service's chilled-water loop. The designers specified 625-ton chillers for the building's penthouse, which required the services of a group of structural engineer, electrical contractor, crane operator and mechanical contractor.
