Technical Illiteracy

Article Abstract:

The report of the National Commission on Excellence in Education to the United States Department of Education and to the public in April 1983 cites the poor state of education in the United States. A generation of technologically illiterate Americans is being produced in a technological world. The commission recommended that United States high school education concentrate on five new basics: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Computer Science for designated lengths of time.

Nuclear Trials and Tribulations

Article Abstract:

Events at the Public Service Electric and Gas Co.'s twin-reactor power station in Salem, New Jersey and the Long Island Lighting Co.'s Shoreham boiling-water reactor illustrate the technical, economic, and political problems facing the nuclear industry today. The Shoreham plant is extremely over-budget and the plant's safety is questioned. Technologists, management, regulators, politicians, and the public are all responsible for today's problems with United States nuclear power.

Multiple Exposure

Article Abstract:

Because the quantity of papers an author publishes is often more valuable than the quality published today, authors often simultaneously submit the same paper to a number of journals. Most editors refuse to review a manuscript that has been simultaneously submitted somewhere else. Spectrum editors follow this policy completely.
