The green house effect: the domestic household has remained blissfully free of technological or environmental pressures

Article Abstract:

There are gradual changes taking place in the home market for electrics, with discussions taking place about bus systems and the development of homes based on energy efficiency and the use of natural materials. A bungalow on the Cala Homes estate in Cumbernauld, Scotland, has been built as a prototype low energy home. Electric lighting is via compact fluorescent and tungsten fittings. Westminster Lodge at Hooke Park in Dorset is part of a proposed ecological village, based on the use of neglected British wood products. It features heating via a combination of radiant and storage heaters, and combined floodlighting and metal halide uplighters.

The per cent descent

Article Abstract:

A report by Sir Michael Latham on the state of the U.K.'s construction industry suggests that productivity must improve if the industry is to become more competitive. A survey in 1994 comparing two office developments in the U.S. and U.K. concludes that the U.S. project was 30% cheaper than its British counterpart. Many in the construction industry believe that substantial savings are possible in areas such as procurement and prefabrication. Further suggestions as to how such savings could be achieved are presented.

Call m&e up in the year 2000

Article Abstract:

A simple yet efficient testing system has been developed by software firm Embedded Science to test year 2000 compliance of embedded systems. The Delta-T probe is very quick, reducing testing time from several weeks to just a few hours. The system works by monitoring functions which rely on date information, making adjustments to the programme immediately, without the need to check every application. The industry is stressing the need for year 2000 compliance using competent testing software and skilled electricians.
