Tracking the progress of Robin Hood: opening up a disused Nottinghamshire branch railway line has added momentum to other rail projects

Article Abstract:

A 28 million pounds sterling rail restoration project has been part financed by a consortium of local authorities headed by Nottinghamshire County Council. The Robin Hood Line project aimed to developer passenger services on a route between Nottingham, Mansfield and Worksop. The line is being restored in three stages, with stage one, the route between Nottingham and Newstead, opening in 1993. The second stage began in 1994 concentrating on a new rail link section and opened in 1995. It has been successful in terms of public response and usage.

Thames divides London opinion

Article Abstract:

Proposals by speakers at the 'London in the 21st century' public debate to turn the Thames into a tourist lagoon, have been met by suspicion by some Londoners. London Rivers Association chairman George Nicholson wants steps and access to be re-opened and lost tributaries to be reclaimed, but believes that a problem of a lagoon could be stagnant surface water which would affect trade and shipping costs.
