Your word is my command

Article Abstract:

DragonDictate, $9,000 from Dragon Systems Inc, is a commercial speech recognition system with a vocabulary of 30,000 words. It learns by listening to the user talking, so accents or speech impediments do not impair its performance. The system is composed of a speech recognition board, a microphone and software and runs on an IBM PC/AT-compatible microcomputer with 8 megabytes of RAM and an Intel 80386 microprocessor running MS-DOS. DragonDictate incorporates phonemes, allophones, syntax, semantics, artificial intelligence, and statistical modeling into one system. It has a success rate of recognizing discrete words accurately 90 percent of the time. DragonDictate does not have to be trained by the user, it comes equipped with software that enables immediate recognition of 25,000 words and has room for an additional 5,000 words defined by the user. DragonDictate is expected to be used by people in 'hands busy/eyes busy' applications such as a radiologist or by disabled people who cannot use a keyboard.

Hawker has last word in ELV switching

Article Abstract:

Hawker Fusegear's ZED range of low voltage switching devices are particularly suitable for remote switching applications such as lighting but are useful in virtually all traditionally wired mains switching applications. As well as eliminating complicated wiring arrangements for multi-way switching, the ZED standalone modular control devices can be interfaced with equipment such as smoke detectors and security systems. Because their switching side is designed to comply with safety extra low voltage (selv) requirements, the ZED devices offer a number of advantages in multi-point switching.
