Abrupt biological response to hydrologic and land-use changes in Lake Apopka, Florida, USA

Article Abstract:

Lake Apopka is a shallow, hypereutrophic lake in north-central Florida that experienced an abrupt shift in primary producer community structure (PPCS) in 1947. The PPCS shift was very abrupt and anecdotal accounts report that dominant, submersed aquatic vegetation was uprooted by a hurricane in 1947 and replaced by phytoplankton. The two hypotheses to explain the sudden shift to phytoplankton are proposed.

Agricultural capacity and conservation in high biodiversity forest ecosystems

Article Abstract:

Agricultural suitability in forested portions of biodiversity hotspots and tropical wilderness areas, regions with rich concentrations of species are examined to understand the likelihood and implications of agricultural expansion in areas of high conservation importance. Analyses reveal low suitability for most crop categories under both commercial and subsistence scenarios, with a few exceptions.

Cacao cultivation and the conservation of biological diversity

Article Abstract:

The continued loss of tropical forests presents a problem that might be at least partially solved by the diverse shade canopies that can be used in cocoa farming. The need for cocoa farming promotion is discussed.
