Assessing groundwater nitrate contamination for resource and landscape management

Article Abstract:

Nitrate contamination in Tulare County, CA have exceeded public health standards since the late 1940s and have generally appeared in townships with citrus, nut orchards or vineyards in coarse-textured soils. The highest concentrations were found in areas where excess nitrogen loads were the highest, the soils had the highest leaching potential and where groundwater elevation level was higher. This information can help farmers make farm-management adjustments.

Human impact on nitrate export: an analysis using major world rivers

Article Abstract:

Researchers developed a model that explained the nearly 1000-fold variations in nitrate export from different regions of the world. This model indicated that human activity is the dominant control of Nitrate export. Such models with continued measurement of nitrate will be of good use and valuable in interpreting regional changes.

The fragile karst landscape in Southwestern China

Article Abstract:

The karst landscape in the Guizhou Province, southwest China, is a fragile area due to high fragmentation, a high corrosion-erosion rate and a shortage of surface water. In order to regain stability in the region, reforestation, pollution control and tourism needs to be carefully developed.
