On increasing returns and discrete choice: integrating production ecological principles in economic analysis of crop management

Article Abstract:

A model of pesticide and nutrient response in relation to the biophysical processes that govern agricultural ecosystems has been developed. Based on the model, marginal returns of pesticide use on an individual crop rely on the potential yield level, growth conditions and pest incidence, as well as on the curvature of the control and damage functions. Fertilizer use was found to yield similar conclusions. A case study that reviews the benefits of alternative farming systems and another that reviews the usefulness of a pesticide levy system as an environmental policy are presented.
