Assessing the effect of natural controls and land use change on sediment yield in a major Andean river: The Magdalena Drainage basin, Columbia

Article Abstract:

An investigation is conducted on the Magdalena drainage basin to study the major natural cause, anthropogenic impacts, spatial and temporal trends and connection between the changes in land use and tendency of the sediment yield. The results showed that the natural causes like runoff and maximum water discharge contributed to almost 58% changes, soil erosion has increased, decrease in forest, increase in agricultural and pastoral activities, mining practices, urbanization has lead to a overall increase in the tendency in sediment yield on a regional scale.

Urban expansion and the loss of prime agricultural lands in Puerto Rico

Article Abstract:

A comparison of agricultural lands in Puerto Rico in 1977 and 1994 show that urban development on agriculturally suitable land has grown by 41.6%, resulting in a 6% net loss of land that could potentially be used for agriculture. Implications for Puerto Rico's future food production and food security are also discussed.

Assessing the effect of climate oscillations and land-use changes on streamflow in the central Spanish Pyrenees

Article Abstract:

An overview is presented on basin discharge in Spain's Pyrenees region since the 1950. Despite regular fluctuations of precipitation and temperature, streamflow discharge has decreased by nearly a third over the last half century. Plant-cover and land-use changes are cited as nonclimatic factors fostering this decrease.
