Machine peat cutting and land use change on blanket bog in Northern Ireland

Article Abstract:

The most significant development of blanket peat exploitation in Northern Ireland is the widespread usage of tractor-mounted extrusion machines for mechanical peat cutting. The amount of blanket peat, the vegetation associated with it and the changes adopted in the blanket peat exploitation in the areas of outstanding natural beauty and Fermanagh district in Northern Ireland are measured. The ecological effect of change of land use on blanket vegetation in the context of peat extraction, agriculture and nature conservation are discussed.

Assessing the sustainability of agriculture at the planning stage

Article Abstract:

A study indicates that agricultural sustainability assessment should include biophysical, economic and social factors at various scales such as farm, field, watershed, regional and national. In view of this, a framework for planning sustainability assessment that encompasses these factors and scales was developed. The main concerns of the framework are characterizing sustainability criteria and identifying potential sources of unsustainability with the agricultural systems.
