Children of a common mother: international youth delegation protests destruction of Great Bear Rainforest

Article Abstract:

A group of 20 youngsters, ages 10 to 18, demonstrated peacefully under the Peace Arch in British Columbia, Canada, to protest against the destruction of the Great Bear Rainforest on the west coast of the Canadian province. Part of Greenpeace's International Banner Project, the demonstration was also meant to show support for the Nuxalk Nation, who were facing a lawsuit for trying to block the clearcutting of their lands in the Great Bear Rainforest.

Great Bear rainforest

Article Abstract:

The timber industry is keen to clear the ancient Great Bear Rainforest of British Columbia despite the environmental devastation it would cause. Environmental activists are campaigning hard to prevent clearcut logging and have succeeded in slowing logging progress. The forest, which has a coastal temperate climate, is populated with a wide range of wildlife and contains cedar trees over 1,000 years old.
