Climate-dependent allocation of resources to secondary sexual traits in red deer

Article Abstract:

The way in which the influence of variation in climate and population density affected the allocation of resources to antlers, based on data from 2720 red deer stag two years or older harvested during 1965-2002 along the West Coast of Norway. It was found that deer have a higher allocation of resources to antlers relative to body weight during favorable environmental conditions.

Feedback structures of northern small rodent populations

Article Abstract:

The relative importance of first and second-order negative feedback on northern small rodent dynamics in 64 data sets is evaluated. It is concluded that northern small rodent populations are basically regulated by both highly consistent first-order feedback and less consistent, site-specific second-order effects.

Using a proxy of plant productivity (NDVI) to find key periods for animal performance: The case of roe deer

Article Abstract:

The influence of plant productivity from birth to fall on the following winter body mass of roe deer fawns is determined. The effect of plant activity is found to be similar for both male and female fawn mass, as expected from the weak intensity of sexual section in roe deer life history traits.
