Consumer vs environmental productivity control of bacterial diversity and bacteria-mediated organic matter decomposition

Article Abstract:

The determinants and functional consequences, consumer verses environmental productivity, of bacterial diversity were experimentally investigated using a simple laboratory bacterial assemblage and the bacterivorous ciliated protist Colpidium striatum. Results reveal that changes in community structure as a result of trophic interactions and other factors might have significant consequences for important ecosystem functions.

The effects of cattle grazing on plant-pollinator communities in a fragmented Mediterranean landscape

Article Abstract:

The impacts of cattle grazing on plant-pollinator communities in a fragmented Mediterranean landscape are studied to explain the mechanisms by which these impacts occur. Results reveal that even though bee and flower diversity might decrease under very heavy cattle grazing, the existing levels of grazing in the studied landscape have only beneficial effects on the bee community.

Function and "functioning" in ecology: What does it mean?

Article Abstract:

Ecological research focuses on ecological functions, the functions of biodiversity, or the functioning of ecological systems. However within ecology 'function' is used in several different meanings where the most important ones are those of function as denoting either process, roles, services or the 'functioning' of whole systems.
