Distribution and remineralization of organic carbon in sediments of a mangrove stand partly contaminated with sewage waste

Article Abstract:

Analysis of a partially contaminated mangrove forest in Zanzibar shows the presence of organic carbon. Water at the fringe of the mangrove forest showed an acidic pH reading of 4-5 and was strongly reducing, while water without sewage influence showed a neutral pH of 6. Remineralization rate was slowest in areas contaminated by sewage, and highest in mangrove areas that were frequently inundated.

Spatial variations in benthic macrofauna and nutrient dynamics in a mangrove forest subject to intense deforestation: Zanzibar, Tanzania

Article Abstract:

Deforestation rapidly affects ecosystems. Heavily logged areas were compared with unlogged areas using spatial variations in benthic macrofauna and nutrient dynamics at locations in Tanzania. The areas showed significant differences in nutrient content, specifically for nitrate, ammonia and phosphate levels. The logging rate at the heavily logged site is not sustainable.

Marine mammals in Tanzanian waters: urgent need for status assessment

Article Abstract:

The survival of dolphins and dugongs in the waters of Tanzania faces multiple challenges. These include incidental and directed catches and loss of or degraded habitat. As of 1998, few major studies have been made of the status and abundance of marine mammals in Eastern Africa.
