Does a long-term oscillation in nitrogen concentration reflect climate impact on submerged vegetation and vulnerability to state shifts in a shallow lake?

Article Abstract:

A 30-years data series on water chemistry, together with the north Atlantic oscillation (NAO) data is used to make inferences on processes in Lake Takern, Sweden, prior to the disappearance of submerged vegetation in 1995-1997. The results have indicated that climate might have contributed to the regime shift through lowered macrophyte production at the time of the shift and hence most likely also a depleted resilience of the clear water state.

Physiological responses to stoichiometric constraints: Nutrient limitation and compensatory feeding in a freshwater snail

Article Abstract:

Various data sets from several field samplings and experiments are presented to observe the role of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) on a freshwater snail. The results show that the stoichiometric constraints of such elements highly affect the physiological changes in the snails, since a compensatory feeding can shift the entire benthic herbivore community from one limitation to the other.

Interactions of ecosystem processes with spatial heterogeneity in the puzzle of nitrogen limitation

Article Abstract:

The potential effects of spatial heterogeneity and its development on the distribution, abundance and functioning of nitrogen fixing and non-fixing components of a model ecosystem is examined. The results of the model experiment suggest local and landscape constraints of primary productivity.
