Evolution of allometries in the worker caste of Dorylus army ants

Article Abstract:

The importance of life-style as a factor in the evolution of allometries of functionally important body traits in Dorylus army ants in the context of an evolutionary scenario, according to which a hypogaeic life-style is the ancestral state in this group, is analyzed. Eight of the nine traits under consideration suggest an increase in relative size from hypogaeic to intermediate to epigaeic life-style.

Dispersal of the lycaenid Plebejus argus in response to patches of its mutualist ant Lasius niger

Article Abstract:

The movement rates of individuals of an obligate myrmecophilous butterfly, Plebejus argus (Lycaenidae: Lepidoptera), in relation to a patch of its mutualist ant, Lasius niger, are examined. The usage of non-random strategies by Plebejus argus for the location of patches of host ant is determined.

Ants in your plants: effects of nectar-thieves on pollen fertility and seed-siring capacity in the alpine wildflower, Polemonium viscosum

Article Abstract:

Pollen from flowers with long-term ant occupancy showed significantly lower germination at virgin recipient stigmas than pollen from unoccupied flowers. Nectar-thieving ants' damage to pollen may reduces paternity per flower visit by between 20 and 26%.
