Fishing effort in the far northern section cross shelf closure area of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: the effectiveness of area-closures

Article Abstract:

A meta-analysis was used to investigate illegal prawn trawling activities in the 10,000-sq-km cross shelf area-closure of the tropical Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia. It was shown that except for the mid-shelf section, most areas in the closure were heavily trawled. This indicates that education and effective monitoring technology are necessary to reduce illegal fishing and conserve and maintain protected marine parks.

Application of non-market valuation to the Florida Keys marine reserve management

Article Abstract:

An exploratory study with an objective of providing quick, but policy-relevant estimates of non-market benefits of marine reserves establishment is done on the basis of a relatively small panel of visitors. The recreational demand and the additional benefits that are expected to occur from marine resource-induced improvements in the coral reef quality in the Florida Keys are estimated.
